EDDY KENZO'S PLEDGE: A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR UGANDAN ARTISTS-COPYRIGHT LAW IN THE SPOTLIGHT

In the bustling corridors of Ugandan music, where lyrics echo through crowded streets and melodies sway hearts, Eddy Kenzo—the chart-topping singer with a story as compelling as his songs—has made a bold declaration. As the year draws to a close, he vows to deliver a long-awaited gift to fellow artists: an amended copyright law. Thanks to his renewed connections with the government and President Yoweri Museveni, Eddy Kenzo stands at the intersection of artistry and legislation. Speaking at the weekly UNMF (Uganda National Musicians Federation) jam session, he confidently declared, “I assure you that we are likely to have a copyright law before Christmas.” The room buzzed with anticipation—a symphony of hope for creators who have long yearned for better protection of their intellectual property. The backstory lies in the Copyright and Neighboring Rights Amendment Bill, drafted by Mawokota North MP Hilary Kiyaga (aka Dr. Hilderman) back in 2022. This bill promises improved rewards for artists, ensuring that their creative works receive fair compensation. However, disagreements with executives stalled its progress, leaving artists in limbo. Enter Eddy Kenzo’s unexpected role: President Museveni appointed him as the presidential advisor on creatives. With this newfound responsibility, Kenzo aims to bridge the gap between artists and policymakers. He revealed that the president has directed ongoing deliberations to iron out contentious points in the bill. A few weeks remain for these discussions, and State House awaits their harmonious resolution. A Personal Choice Kenzo also defended his public support for President Museveni and the NRM government. To him, engaging with the government is essential for effecting change. “They are the ones who make policies,” he emphasized. “If I wake up and say I support Museveni, there is no wrong in that—you are also allowed to support whoever you want.” His advocacy for artists’ rights aligns with his belief that the government can be a force for positive transformation.
