KCCA SETS CONDITIONS FOR NAMING ROAD AFTER JOSE CHAMELEON
The streets of Kampala may soon echo with the name of one of Uganda’s most iconic musicians, Joseph Mayanja, aka Chameleone. The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has expressed openness to the idea of naming a road in honor of the legendary artist. However, there’s a twist: KCCA has set tough conditions that must be met before the road bears Chameleone’s name1. It all began with a tweet—a bold suggestion by journalist Francis Isano. He declared, “History will tell that Uganda has (Jose Chameleone). Dear KCCA, we demand a Joseph Mayanja Road.” The KCCA responded, cheekily challenging Isano and Chameleone’s fans: “Isano, get a million likes on this tweet, and we discuss.” A million likes for a road name? Challenge accepted! Supporters from across East Africa rallied, but with just 4,000 likes gathered so far, the goal remains distant1. While the ‘Million Likes Challenge’ might seem ambitious, Chameleone’s impact on Ugandan music is undeniable. Recently, he celebrated 25 years in the industry with a sold-out concert titled “Legend in Gold.” Held at the luxurious Kampala Serena Hotel, the event was more than a show—it was a spectacle. Chameleone’s performance reaffirmed why he’s often called the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) of Ugandan music. During the concert, Tanzanian stars Bushoke and Ferooz joined him on stage for renditions of Maama Rhoda and Sivyo Ndivyo. Ugandan heavyweights Bebe Cool, Weasel, Mesach Semakula, and D-Star also made special appearances. Fenon Events, known for their expertise in event production, created an epic visual and audio experience that set a new standard for live concerts in Uganda. While they haven’t explicitly detailed them, it’s clear that the road-naming process won’t be a mere popularity contest. Perhaps community involvement, historical significance, or other factors will come into play. Regardless, Chameleone’s fans are determined to meet the challenge and immortalize their musical hero on Kampala’s streets.
