MINISTER PHIONA NYAMUTORO ADDRESSES ANTI-CORRUPTION PROTESTS, CALLS FOR CLARITY ON FOREIGN INFLUENCE

Phiona Nyamutoro, the National Female Youth MP and Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Development (Minerals), has voiced her concerns regarding the recent anti-corruption protests in Uganda. Nyamutoro, who gained national recognition following her ministerial appointment in March 2024, emphasized that while the fight against corruption is crucial, it has been compromised by individuals with selfish political motives. Nyamutoro pointed out that some young people have been misled by negative influences and have inadvertently become agents of the very corruption they claim to oppose. She argued that these youths have failed the test of patriotism by allowing themselves to be manipulated by foreign interests. The Minister noted that some participants in the protests might not have realized they were being used for political agendas driven by foreign agents. She urged the police to investigate the detained protesters and release those who were unknowingly misled. "Most patriotic leaders are particularly silent about this so-called ideal demonstration because it is cloaked with foreign interests. It’s unfortunate that many innocent young people are unknowingly used for political reasons that end up undermining the genuine causes they stand for. As the President has clarified, police should help identify and release those who were misled," Nyamutoro stated. The fight against corruption is one for every patriotic Ugandan, and it starts by not being corrupt or an agent of corruption," she added. At least 60 Ugandan youths were arrested and charged with being idle, disorderly, and a public nuisance after attempting to march to parliament in protest against corruption. They also demanded the resignation of Speaker Anita Among. President Museveni has previously questioned Anita Among on her source of wealth, later defending her as hardworking even as the UK and US imposed sanctions on her over corruption. His statements, along with Nyamutoro's, have left Ugandans uncertain about the government's stance on corruption. Museveni, who had warned youths against engaging in protests, now claims that the #AnitaMustResign and anti-corruption protests are funded by foreign agents with malicious intentions towards Uganda. He added that he would have joined the protests if he were not suspicious of their funding and motives.
