SSEMUJJU NGANDA CRITICISES EDDY KENZO'S APPOINTMENT AS PRESIDENTIAL ADVISOR
The recent appointment of celebrated Ugandan musician Eddy Kenzo as the Senior Presidential Advisor on Creatives has sparked mixed reactions across the country. Among the critics is Kira Municipality MP Ssemujju Nganda, who has openly questioned the suitability of Kenzo for the advisory role. On August 21, 2024, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni appointed Eddy Kenzo, whose real name is Edrisa Musuuza, as the Senior Presidential Advisor on Creatives. The appointment was intended to bring fresh perspectives and support to Uganda’s creative arts sector, leveraging Kenzo’s extensive experience and influence in the music industry. Ssemujju Nganda, a prominent opposition figure, has voiced his concerns about the appointment, arguing that it undermines the prestige of the presidential advisory role. In a recent interview, Nganda stated, "I like Kenzo as a singer and he has value, but I don’t think his value is in advising the president. If you look at the quality of the first people to be appointed presidential advisors, the likes of Prof George Kanyeihamba, Gen David Sejusa, and Ephraim Kamuntu, it demeans that office when you begin appointing people including those with no knowledge and experience and elevate them to be your advisors". Nganda’s comments reflect a broader debate about the qualifications and experience required for such high-level advisory positions. He emphasized the need for advisors who possess a deep understanding of governance and policy-making, rather than those primarily known for their artistic achievements. Despite the criticism, many in the creative community have rallied behind Kenzo, praising his appointment as a positive step for the arts sector. Supporters argue that Kenzo’s success and international recognition make him a valuable advocate for the creative industry. They believe his appointment will help address long-standing issues and promote the growth of the arts in Uganda. Eddy Kenzo has expressed gratitude for the appointment and remains focused on his new role. In his acceptance speech, he stated, "I am honored to take on this role and look forward to working with the government and my fellow artists to create a thriving environment for the creative industry in Uganda"2. Kenzo’s commitment to advocating for the rights and interests of creatives has been well-received by many in the industry. The appointment of Eddy Kenzo as Senior Presidential Advisor on Creatives has ignited a debate about the qualifications and roles of presidential advisors. While critics like Ssemujju Nganda question the decision, supporters see it as an opportunity to elevate the creative arts sector. As Kenzo steps into his new role, the nation will be watching closely to see how he navigates the challenges and opportunities ahead.
