UGANDAN OLYMPIAN REBECCA CHEPTEGEI SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES AFTER BOYFRIEND'S FIERY ATTTCK
In a tragic and horrifying turn of events, Ugandan Olympic marathoner Rebecca Cheptegei has lost her life due to severe burn injuries inflicted by her boyfriend. The incident occurred in Eldoret, Kenya, leaving the sports community in shock and raising serious concerns about domestic violence1. Rebecca Cheptegei, aged 33, had represented Uganda at the Paris Olympic Games. On September 1, 2024, she was attacked in her residence in Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya. Her former boyfriend allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire. The flames left her with burns covering a devastating 80 percent of her body. The same attack also resulted in burn injuries to her boyfriend, who is currently receiving treatment alongside her2. Cheptegei was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret. Despite the medical team’s efforts, her condition deteriorated rapidly. Dr. Owen Menach, the acting Director at MTRH, confirmed the heartbreaking news: “Unfortunately, we lost her after all her organs failed last night.” The loss of this talented athlete has sent shockwaves through the sports world and beyond. Rebecca Cheptegei’s tragic fate serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of domestic violence against women. Her dedication to her sport and her resilience were evident, but no one could have anticipated this brutal attack. She becomes the third female athlete to be killed in Kenya since October 2021, joining a heartbreaking list that includes Agnes Jebet Tirop, another long-distance runner who met a similarly violent end. As we mourn the loss of Rebecca Cheptegei, let us also renew our commitment to raising awareness about domestic violence and supporting survivors. No one should suffer such brutality, especially not those who inspire us on the world stage. Let her memory be a catalyst for change—a call to action against violence in all its forms.
